Game Design with GameSalad

This unit addresses, in part, the TIJ1O curriculum expectations for Technological Design and Computer Technology.

GameSalad is a game authoring environment that, through the use of rules and events, allows for the rapid creation of 2D games for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch devices.

By using GameSalad in this unit, you will learn about elementary logic and the engineering design cycle – while at the same time, hopefully, creating an interesting game or two!

Each page on this site will illustrate how to accomplish a useful task in GameSalad.

Key Concepts

When you see blue text like this:

Learning Alert!

... pay special attention.  This is where key knowledge concepts will be described – ideas that you may be assessed on later this year.

Opportunities to Learn

For some pages on the site, there will also be a Two for you! section.  These will be two exercises related to the concept that was just described.

The Two for you! exercises are your Opportunities to Learn.  You are expected to complete at least one of the two exercises each time they are given.

At various points throughout the unit, I will ask you to show me your OTLs (so be sure to save your work).  You may proceed at your own pace, but by the end of the unit, you are expected to have all OTLs completed.

Suggested Order for Study

Once you understand certain key concepts about writing programs in GameSalad, you can more or less study any topic in whatever order you choose.

So what key concepts should you begin with, before branching out into topics of your choice?

Be sure that you have reviewed these key concepts, in the order given:

1 - GameSalad Basics

2 - Prototypes vs. Instances

3 - Attributes and Program State

Then, feel free to proceed to whatever areas of this website interest you.
